Happy International Women’s Day

March 8th marks International Women’s Day and we are delighted to share some videos with women working and volunteering in police custody.

This year’s theme is #ChoosetoChallenge and Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) do just that. ICVs visit custody to talk to detainees and check on the rights, entitlements and wellbeing of detainees, highlighting good work as well as drawing attention to issues that need to be challenged.

Our first video is with Marie from the North Wales scheme. Marie talks to ICVA’s Chief Operating Officer, Sherry, about her experiences volunteering in custody. Marie explains what it’s like to be a woman in the role and talks about her work in ensuring effective menstrual care in her area.

We also hear from Gemma from the North Wales Women’s Pathfinder Service. The Women’s Pathfinder scheme aims to support any women with complex needs or those who are at risk of offending or re-offending. Gemma’s interview is a celebration of the work that they carry out to help stop offending.

Finally, we hear from Dharmista who runs Leicestershire’s ICV scheme. Dharmista talks about what she values and is proud of in her scheme and how the scheme makes a difference to detainees.

It’s a real joy to celebrate these women and their work in these interviews. Wishing you all a Happy International Women’s Day, especially to ICV schemes and stakeholders who #ChoosetoChallenge.
