June 9, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we at ICVA announce the sad passing of a previous ICVA board member, Martin Barsby, aged 52.

Martin had overall responsibility for independent custody visiting in Norfolk, managing Simon, the scheme manager there as well as holding the role of Director of Communications and Engagement of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk.

He joined the ICVA board in July 2017 as one of ICVA’s member directors, and it was clear from the outset that he was an involved, proactive and dedicated member of the Board. Martin gave excellent communications advice to the board and officers alike adding real expertise to ICVA’s strategies. He was incredibly helpful across all of ICVA’s workstreams during his tenure including some of the menstrual care work and the inception of the Quality Assurance Framework during his tenure which ended in October 2019 due to ill health.

Martin was a man who was committed to fairness, dignity and the effective treatment of those who are taken into police custody. It was our absolute pleasure to have worked with him.

Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with his family, friends and peers at this difficult time.

ICVA Board and Officers.
