Appropriate Adults for 17 year olds: Revised Guidance

June 2013

We were delighted to receive an update from the Policing and Criminal Justice Minister, Damian Green, regarding revised guidance for the provision of appropriate adults to 17 year olds, following a Judicial Review ruling.

The revised guidance advises that an appropriate adult be provided to all 17 year olds. This may be a parent or guardian, or professional appropriate adult, depending on the 17 years old’s preference.  In order to comply with the ruling, the Government will be amending PACE Code of Practice C in due course and a consultation will be launched shortly on the changes in the normal way.
